What it really is

What does an architect actually do?

Think of any building you know — a home, a school, an office, an airport. Long before the first brick, someone decided how the spaces flow, where the light falls, how people move through it, and how it stands up safely. That someone is the architect.

The job runs from the concept (sketches, massing, the big idea) to design development (plans, sections, elevations, materials) to working drawings (the detailed, dimensioned set a contractor actually builds from) — and then site supervision to make sure what gets built matches the drawing. Along the way you coordinate with structural, electrical and plumbing engineers, and steer the design through municipal approvals and building bye-laws.

In practice, day-to-day you sketch, model in software (AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp), make presentations for clients, sit in coordination meetings, visit sites, and solve a hundred small problems — a beam that clashes with a window, a budget that won't stretch, a client who changed their mind. Less "lone genius", more "the person who holds the whole thing together".

Honest answer: yes for skilled, adaptable architects — but the job is changing fast, and the routine entry-level work is shrinking. Here's the picture.

India keeps building — housing, infrastructure, commercial space, smart cities — so the underlying demand for architects is real and steady. It isn't a boom field, and the market is crowded with graduates, but qualified, licensed architects who can deliver do find work. The long-term picture is solid; the squeeze is at the entry rung.

The bigger shift is technology. BIM (Building Information Modelling), led by Revit, has moved from optional to expected. The government has mandated BIM on large public projects (CPWD/MoHUA, for projects above roughly ₹500 crore), and global firms and service centres in India increasingly require it. Architects who can actually run Revit and coordinate BIM are in short supply — that skill is one of the safest bets in the field right now.

What about AI? Generative-design tools (Autodesk Forma, Spacemaker and similar) can now explore massing options, optimise floor plates for daylight, and run early performance checks in minutes — automating exactly the repetitive drafting and iteration juniors used to be hired for. That raises the bar at entry. But design judgement, client trust, site coordination and statutory approvals still need a human architect. AI is a power tool, not a replacement — and fluency with it is becoming part of the job, not optional.

What you need to study

B.Arch, NATA & the COA licence — the only real path.

The standard route
PCM in Class 12 → NATA / JEE Paper 2 → 5-year B.Arch

You need Physics, Chemistry and Maths in Class 12 (at least 50%), then a qualifying score in NATA (accepted by ~500 colleges) or JEE Main Paper 2 (needed for NITs, SPAs, IITs). Both test maths, aptitude and drawing. The B.Arch is a 5-year professional degree that includes a practical-training internship.

Council of Architecture (COA) registration

Under the Architects Act, 1972, you must register with the COA to legally use the title "Architect"and to sign and stamp building drawings for approvals. You need a recognised B.Arch to register. (A 2020 Supreme Court ruling clarified that the title is protected, even though the Act doesn't bar others from doing architectural work.)

Architects earn a lot, right from the start.

This is the biggest myth, and it hurts people. After a 5-year degree, most freshers start at just ₹2–4L a year — among the lowest returns of any professional course in India. Good money exists, but it comes after years, seniority, or a successful own practice. Go in knowing this.

Architecture is just drawing pretty buildings.

Design is maybe a third of it. The rest is technical detailing, structures, building codes, coordinating engineers, managing budgets, getting approvals and supervising sites. It's as much project management and problem-solving as art.

You need to be a brilliant artist to get in.

Drawing helps and is tested, but it can be learned and improved. Spatial thinking, patience and problem-solving matter more over a career than raw artistic talent.

AI and software will make architects obsolete.

AI and BIM are automating drafting and concept iteration — the routine junior work — which is real and worth respecting. But design judgement, client trust, site coordination and statutory sign-off still need a licensed human. The skill rising in value is fluency with these tools.

A B.Arch only lets you be an architect.

Don't just chase marks. Learn Revit/BIM this semester, enter one design competition, and treat your internship as the real interview. A strong portfolio beats a strong transcript.

How do you become an architect in India?
Take Physics, Chemistry and Maths in Class 12, then clear NATA or JEE Main Paper 2 to get into a 5-year Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) at a COA-approved college. The course includes a practical-training internship year. After graduating you register with the Council of Architecture (COA) — mandatory to legally call yourself an 'Architect' and sign building drawings.
What skills does an architect need in India?
Design and spatial thinking first, backed by hand sketching and software: AutoCAD for drawings, Revit/BIM for modern practice (increasingly required), plus SketchUp, Rhino, Lumino/Enscape for 3D and rendering, and Photoshop for presentation. On top of that you need knowledge of building codes and bye-laws, structures and materials, plus the soft skills — client communication, site coordination and managing approvals.
