What does a research scientist actually do?
Almost everything around you started as someone's research — the mRNA vaccine, the chip in your phone, the seeds in a farmer's field, the model behind ChatGPT. A research scientist is the person who does that work: finds a question nobody has answered, designs a way to investigate it, runs the experiments or builds the models, and publishes the result so others can build further.
Day-to-day, that means reading the latest papers, planning and running experiments (at a bench, on a telescope, or in code), wrangling and analysing data, writing papers and grant proposals, and discussing findings with collaborators. A huge part of the job is writing — your results only count once they're published and survive peer review.
The work splits by where you do it. In academia you set your own research direction and also teach. In a government lab (CSIR, DRDO, ISRO, ICAR) you work on national missions — defence, space, agriculture, health. In industry R&D (pharma, tech, AI labs) you solve problems that turn into products, with bigger budgets and far bigger paycheques.

Will this still be a great career in 10 years?
Honest answer: yes for the genuinely committed — research itself is growing in India — but the bottleneck is permanent posts and funding, not interest. Here's the picture.
The good news is real: India is now the third-largest producer of scientific research in the world, publishing around 278,000 papers in 2022 and growing faster than the global average. Government R&D spending is rising, the new Anusandhan National Research Foundation is being set up to fund research more broadly, and India awards roughly 40,000 PhDs a year. The demand for good research exists.
The hard truth is the bottleneck after the PhD. Permanent academic posts are scarce relative to the number of PhDs, so many capable people cycle through years of short-term postdocs, and competition for Assistant Professor and government scientist openings is intense. The career isn't shrinking — but the supply of qualified researchers outpaces the supply of secure, well-paid academic chairs. That's exactly why the industry track matters.
What about AI?Unusually for a career page, AI is mostly a tailwind here. It accelerates literature review, data analysis, coding and even hypothesis generation, making good scientists more productive rather than replacing them — the core skill is original thinking AI can't do. The classic path. Pick your subject early (physics, chemistry, biology, maths, CS), do a BSc then an MSc, and enter a PhD via an entrance exam. IISc, IITs, IISERs, TIFR, central universities and CSIR labs are the destinations that matter most.
Engineers go into applied and AI research; doctors into biomedical research; IISER / NISER integrated 5-year MSc students skip a step. Some strong CS researchers enter ML labs after a master's. The PhD is still the common credential.

The path is long but the order is clear. Adjust pace and field, not the sequence. This is the route most Indian researchers actually take.
Foundation
Class 11 → BSc- Take science in Class 11–12 (PCM or PCB depending on your field).
- Do a BSc (or BTech/MBBS) in your subject — focus on understanding, not just marks.
- Get into a lab early: a summer project, a professor's group, anything hands-on.
- Read popular science and a few real papers to see if the work excites you.

Master's + the gate exams
